Lartigue 2010 Community S.W.O.T. Analysis - Trenton Economic Development

     On Saturday, February 13, Lartigue 2010 held its second community roundtable at the Trenton Marriott at Lafayette Yards.  Each of the five committees conducted an analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) associated with their respective areas of Trenton's overall civic, social and economic health.


     The next roundtable will be held on Saturday, March 6, from 11am until 1pm at the Marriott and each committee will follow up their SWOT analysis by establishing the mission, goals and objectives to address key issues (Action Plan). Strengths


  • Empty Houses / Vacant land
  • On the NE Corridor
  • Arts Community
  • Willing labor pool
  • Some good public services

 


Weaknesses


  • Few customers for retail business
  • Weak private economy
  • Few amenities
  • Run down buildings
  • High taxes relative to the region
  • Perception that we’re not safe
  • Low education levels
  • Slow technical inspections department

 


Opportunities


  • Market “burg” as Latin restaurant district
  • Developable Land
  • Use Teach for America
  • Focus on small rather than large developers
  • Low rents for commercial space
  • Possibility of doing “industry” targeted economic development
  • Ability to attract DINKs (especially Gay and Black professional couples)
  • Ability to attract people w/ disposable incomes

 


Threats


  • Budget whims of the State of NJ
  • City budget has structural problems
  • We’re too attractive to the underclass because of the services we provide to the poor, mentally ill and addicted
  • Too many non-profits
  • Crime rate
