Lartigue 2010 Community S.W.O.T. Analysis - Trenton Public Safety

On Saturday, February 13, Lartigue 2010 held its second community roundtable at the Trenton Marriott at Lafayette Yards.  Each of the five committees conducted an analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) associated with their respective areas of Trenton's overall civic, social and economic health.

The next roundtable will be held on Saturday, March 6, from 11am until 1pm at the Marriott and each committee will follow up their SWOT analysis by establishing the mission, goals and objectives to address key issues (Action Plan). Lartigue2010 SWOT Analysis - Public Safety

STRENGTHS

* Police - Have been raising their profile and presence in the

  wards via CPAC's, local precincts

* Fire - perceived as a strong, dedicated department with good

   response times, well-trained firefighters

WEAKNESSES

* Police - Slow response times, often no response if problems

  are seen as minor

* Police - Officers not residents, not invested in the city and its

   neighborhoods

* Police - "4 days on/off" seen as sign of cushy contract that

serves officers' interests more than citizens

* Fire - declining infrastructure (hydrants), aging equipment

* Police - Overlap of jurisdictions, between City PD and State

  Police

* EMS - Poor communications systems between dispatch and

  the field, between field units

OPPORTUNITIES

* Community policing (foot patrols, better more frequent use of

CPAC) could help foster better communication

* Replace gang influence with that of schools and families

* More gang intervention, gang recovery programs could

  proactively reduce crime

THREATS

* Police - Duplication and Overlap of services among the various law enforcement agencies waste resources

* Police - Perception of lack of communication and coordination   among those agencies

* Fire/EMS - Aging infrastructure and equipment a danger to

  citizens as well as responders
